Family of teen murdered by Scotland's youngest female killer in plea to protect kids from violence

The family of a teenager murdered by Scotland’s youngest female killer have pleaded with the Government to protect more young people from a terrifying surge in violence.

Since February, the Record has been lobbying the Scottish Government in response to a series of shocking attacks involving children which we have reported on across Scotland. They’re want to see more police on the streets in the hardest-hit communities; more investment in social work and support services to detect children who could pose a serious risk; tougher sentences for young people convicted of violent offences and more cash for community projects for young people.

Five years on, Conner’s bedroom remains as he left it, with his clothes hanging in the wardrobe and his aftershave lined up.In a moving letter to justice secretary Angela Costance, Janet, 64, said Conner’s death had left the family “scarred forever”.“I cannot bear the thought of anther family having to endure the same pain and heartache and tragedy that we have had to face.

Janet said: “We hear time and time again that violence and knife crime is under control but it doesn’t feel like it when there is still so much tragedy.” The family were moved to write to the Government following the murder of 14-year-old Justin McLaughlin, who died from a single stab wound to the heart after a senseless attack at Glasgow’s High Street station.

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “We are helping to educate young people on the consequences of knife crime by providing £4.5 million for the No Knives, Better Lives campaign since 2009 and in 2016, higher maximum penalties were created for people carrying knives and offensive weapons in public to 5 years.

Our Kids... Our Future The Record launched Our Kids...Our Future six months ago in reaction to a series of shocking attacks on children.
