Residents and visitors to Glasson Dock on Lancashire's northern coastline say more needs to happen in the village if it is to thrive, with the closure of pubs devastating to trade
The coastal village of Glasson Dock is making waves this summer with major engineering challenges over a broken port sea gate as well as a leaking canal lock at nearby Glasson Marina.
Various organisations have different roles at Glasson including the Lancaster Port Commission, the Canal & Rivers Trust and the Environment Agency, Others include Aquavista, which operates the marina, Lancaster City Council, a parish council, large and small businesses, property owners and residents.
"In one of the shops, there are old photos of Glasson showing what it used to look like. It was lovely. I didn't realise there had been problems here with the canal and dock things. But I spoke to people at the cafe and they know all about it." Regarding Lancaster Port Commission which runs Glasson Dock, Bernard claimed: "The port commission is one of its own and they seem to do what they want. They stopped all the pleasure vessels from stopping at the [inner] dock. They have commandeered all the land that villagers used to park their cars on. They just did it. There was no explanation.
GLASSON PUBS Regarding village pubs, past and present, Bernard said the former Caribou next to Harbour House was converted into flats. Next to it was a concert hall, also converted into flats. SMOKEHOUSE AND VENISON Outside the currently empty Victoria Inn were Catherine and Adelle Walls. They had travelled to Glasson from Hoylake on the Wirral, Merseyside. They had been to the Smokehouse, bought venison, and a café. There were some good changes which they liked. But it needs more, they said.
