But now he’s got a bigger job, and Sunak is discovering one of the rules of British politics: no one ever wants to stop being foreign secretary. One of Sunak’s predecessors,, explained why in his memoir: “You basically spend your time with people who are polite to you, on the global issues of the day, and travel the world generally dispensing goodwill and opinions to those who seem relatively keen to receive them.
A foreign secretary gets the best bits of international travel without any of the rubbish. Much of the travel is by private plane, with RAF stewards pouring tea from a silver pot. They sweep through airports at a brisk trot, skipping past security and immigration queues straight to limousines that whizz them into town with a motorcycle escort.
