Stephen Dorrell, who served as secretary of state under Tory prime minister John Major, said it was 'blindingly obvious' that the NHS being pushed to the brink would result in industrial action
“There is particular concern about patients who may have delayed seeking care – and whose conditions have deteriorated – now coming forward for treatment,” she said, adding that the NHS is anticipating a surge in emergency calls over the next few days.
Christina McAnea, the general secretary of Unison, said it was “completely disingenuous” of Mr Barclay to claim that unions were putting patients’ lives at risk. “We’ve done everything we can to minimise the impact, especially on the most vulnerable, the worst cases,” she said. “Those who would be calling [who] would be dealt with as category 1, or category 1, may actually get a better service today, because it’s just been focused on those groups, which sounds a bit bizarre.”
