Huge historic manor to become Lancashire's biggest private home in £15m transformation
A huge Lancashire hall which dates back hundreds of years and has been used as a military hospital and a care home which will be turned back into a family home.
The building was bought by Colin Shenton in 2020 and the Manchester businessman has now been given the green light to undertake the major works by Chorley Borough Council. Mr Shenton’s business interests include restoring heritage buildings as restoring the former glory of the hall is central to the plan. As such, Historic England offered its support and backing to the plan.A house was first built on the site in 1199 and the present hall was built in stages across 200 years starting in 1717.
The Ministry of Defence requisitioned the estate during World War II and converted it first into an Army Education Centre and later the British Army Divisional Headquarters of the Anti-Aircraft Command. A sale to the MoD was carried out in 1967 and the estate then became the HQ for the Army’s North West District.
In 1985, the Hall became a Sue Ryder Care Home for patients with neurological conditions. Mr Shenton bought the property in 2020 and set about his grand plans for private use. Some of that work will involve undoing changes made during the care home use and significant restoration of the historic assets.
