Up to 1.7 million women in the UK are thought to suffer from chronic UTI symptoms - and it's affecting their relationships as well as their health, finds Rosie Fitzmaurice

, spent her 20s and 30s back and forth to her doctors with recurrent UTIs. “I was a renal nurse, I’ve seen what UTIs can do to people,” she says. “It destroys lives and relationships. I constantly got infections, always after sex; cystitis; thrush; and occasionally bacterial vaginosis , which then led to vaginismus, where the pelvic floor muscles tighten up, making sex painful. It creates this disconnect – my head was saying ‘yes’, my vagina was saying ‘no’.

In many cases, “recurrent or chronic UTI is a condition that never truly goes away”, Anderson adds. “Some people are lucky – it does seem to disappear for years. But that patient will always be more likely to get a UTI than a patient who has never had one.” For that reason, accurate diagnosis is crucial. When patients come to her, she’ll usually ask them to give up penetrative, as well as caffeinated drinks , and cut down or cut out alcohol and reduce sugar in their diet. “Sugar spills over into urine and we know these bugs love sugar,” she says.
