Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that these days, I am not often without my baby, which, as it turns out, is an accessory that does tend to age you somewhat. Whether it’s because people – wrongly in my case – presume that because you are now in charge of a human life, you have somehow gained wisdom, or because as a society, we don’t look kindly on postpartum women in terms of their sexual attractiveness, it’s hard to say.
I feel older too, and not in a bad way. Parenting has given me a level of perspective I didn’t have beforehand – although it must also be said that you don’t have to have a baby to achieve this maturation of spirit. I can only speak for myself, but the combination of a baby-provoked reassessment of what really matters in my life alongside the opportunity to smile more, have made all of the other stuff worth it, in the end.
So I’ll take the crows feet, and my new silver hairs with grace, because in them lie the evidence that some joy has grown from me and into the world. And who says visible signs of ageing are a bad thing, anyway?
