Passengers will be asked to step onto the scales before take-off
A major airline is set to weigh passengers before they board in a move to reduce wasting fuel and help more accurately estimate the overall weight of the plane. Korean Air, Korea's largest airline, will measure the weight of passengers, including their carry-on baggage, but it is far from the first airline to do so.
According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the measure complies with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's aviation regulations, which mandate the assessment of standardised passenger weight which includes their carry-on items. The Aircraft Weight and Balance Control measure outlined by the ministry, says airlines have to calculate the average weight per passenger every five years or whenever circumstances warrant it to be done again.
If you don't want to be weighed, passengers can opt out by telling one of the flight's boarding staff. In May, New Zealand Air also hit the headlines for doing their own weight research, when around 10,000 passengers were required to be weighed as part of updating their safety precautions.
