US President Joe Biden has warned that Hurricane Ian ripping across Florida may be the deadliest hurricane in the state’s history with early reports of “substantial loss of life”.made landfall in south-west Florida on Wednesday afternoon, destroying homes and businesses and leaving more than 2.5 million homes and businesses without power with at least one man confirmed to have died.
Mr Biden said: “It is still moving across the state today. This could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida’s history. As the hurricane wreaked havoc, two area hospitals were evacuated, with patients moved to higher ground and rescue crews battling to reach people trapped in flooded homes.“The amount of water that’s been rising, and will likely continue to rise today even as the storm is passing, is basically a 500-year flooding event.”
