Juliet Bravo was a 1980s TV police series starring Anna Carteret as Inspector Kate Longton - but nobody knew the actress was suffering from crippling bipolar disorder
Anna Carteret was one of the biggest television stars of the 1980s, known to millions as Inspector Kate Longton in the hit BBC TV police drama, Juliet Bravo. For although police dramas were already well-established on British TV, the series – along with London Weekend Television's The Gentle Touch – put female characters in lead roles, at a time when the industry was notorious for sexism.
"I suppose acting saved my life because without it I would've had to reveal my true self," she revealed on the show. She also spoke about her behind-the-scenes struggle during her time on Juliet Bravo, where she felt she had to keep her problems to herself, saying: "I just didn't talk about it. If you’re on set with someone you don’t want to burden them."
Anna revealed how meeting Stephen Fry, who admitted to his own battles with mental health back in 2006, helped her accept her condition.
