It gets a bad rap but residents think that's unfair

In its prime Fleetwood was the third-biggest fishing port in England. Today, the seaside town's fishing industry is virtually non-existent.

It was proverbial Fleetwood fishing death knell, as those seas were where the majority of their cod was caught. But the 'Cod Army' lives on as the nickname for Fleetwood Town FC, a team lifelong resident and stalwart fisherman Bryan Houghton still has a season ticket for. Bryan now shares his deep passion and rich experience for fishing as a volunteer at Fleetwood Museum, which takes a deep dive into the town's maritime heritage and is a treasure trove of intricate trawler models, rare, faded photographs and fascinating exhibitions.

Terry believes Fleetwood's relative infancy is ultimately its ace card, with a combination of "rich heritage and modern infrastructure" along with his beaches, which he declares "the best in the north west". "Fishermen would go out to sea for 22 days and come back for three then they'd be off again," Bryan explained. "That first day would not be resting, it would be spent down the pub."

Andrew Bailey works at The Steamer pub on the promenade, which is owned by comedian Syd Little and his wife Sheree. The pub is the oldest in the town and over the decades has seen its clientele switch from weary fishermen to tourists and loyal regulars. "It's great working here, we're all one big family," Andrew said.
