You'll have noticed an egg shortage in your local supermarket

Lancashire farmers have hit out at what they claim is a price war against them waged by the 'big boys' of the industry.

“The warnings were made back in the summer, that if supermarkets didn’t start paying their egg producers more, they wouldn’t be physically able to restock sheds due to the rapid increase in feed & energy bills. They’re now masking behind bird flu, and pretending they can’t do anything about it.” Warning that local suppliers will just ‘disappear’ if nothing changes, they said: “With running costs soaring and supermarkets being their normal obnoxious selves refusing to increase the price they pay to suppliers, as well as driving down their selling price so small businesses can’t compete, it’s no wonder there is an egg shortage.

He told us: “Our sales are way down because of that scaremongering. It’s driving people to say, I will get a frozen one and stick it in the freezer. The unintended consequences are that it’s cancelled out the free range market entirely.” He’s sold only five per cent of his 500 turkeys this year, compared to half this time last year, he said, adding: “It’s a really tough time - we are more worried about selling the turkeys than we are about bird flu. Our birds are healthy, fighting fit, we’ve taken all the precautions, provided playpens, classical music, and when you get one from us, you know exactly what field it’s come from.”
