Pop on your raincoat and head out into the great outdoors
The historic changes to Lancashire's borders remain a contentious issue or many and this week's suggested walk takes us to any area which is largely no longer in the county.
We've included a stopping point at the Scotch Piper Inn which has been in operation since 1320 and offers a wonderful step into the past. Legend has it that the watering hole got its name from a similar 18th century love match between a Jacobite soldier and a local innkeeper’s daughter. History states that a Highland soldier on his way back from an aborted Jacobite rebellion in 1745 ended up stranded in darkness at the top of Clieves Hill in Ormskirk.
Locals say the building served as a blacksmiths, while other rooms could have been a cattle shed, but a beer house was always on site, while underground, medieval tunnels are rumoured to run to nearby St Catherine’s Chapel, known locally as Lydiate Abbey, which was ruined in time of Henry VIII.
