Ah, but Bedard, we’re told, is something else. Something. To hear the breathless reports of Bedard’s majesty, and to read the poetic waxing of those who regularly see him play, Bedard is going to step into the NHL and instantly be one of the very best players in the game, perhaps evenbest. He won’t just change a team overnight, he’ll change the game itself. Generational. Transformative. Unstoppable. Ineffable.
Yes, he’s considered the best prospect since McDavid, and he’s the most hyped since McDavid, too. And it’s true, McDavid has been even better than advertised. He’s easily the best player in the world, and he might be the most talented player ever, capable of doing things nobody’s ever done, at speeds nobody’s ever seen.Yet eight years into his career, McDavid’s still looking for his first playoff victory beyond the second round.
Besides, prospect evaluation is a lot like the 10-day weather forecast. It’s all based in sound, observable data, with experience informing speculation. But a lot can change between now and then. Just Google “” and “generational” and find out for yourself. Lafrenière, the top pick in the 2020 draft, was “the best prospect since McDavid,” too. He was deemed “generational” by many. A “can’t-miss” pick, according to just about everyone.
“It’s not easy,” Lafrenière said, when asked what advice he’d have for Bedard. “Obviously, it’s a really good league. There are plenty of good players. You have to stay patient.
