When I was a child, my street didn’t have a neighbourhood watch. But we did have a neighbourhood witch. Genuinely. She knew about flower remedies, had a cat, long hair, read tarot and lent me the spare key to my front door whenever I’d accidentally locked myself out. They will drive you to the station, lend you their blender, offer up any weird things that came in their online shopping, come and fix a leaking sink, print something out for you, put together flatpack furniture and look after your children.
