Presenter Chris Evans has revealed he has been diagnosed with skin cancer - here's the symptoms of the disease to look out for including one sign which might go unnoticed
There are hundreds of different forms of cancer - many with different symptoms depending on the type. And regular health campaigns mean many people know what to look out for such as lumps in the breast which can be a sign of breast cancer or excessive bruising which can signal leukaemia.
With skin cancer. the symptoms people tend to look out for are moles which change their shape or colour. And while that is a key early sign of the disease there is a lesser-known one which can mean something serious is happening, reports The Mirror. It's the perfect time to check in with your body while you're doing everyday activities as if you don't normally become short of breath, it could be a warning sign. However, it's important to be aware that breathlessness can also be a symptom of another condition, such as pneumonia. So you should speak to a GP straight away if you are having new symptoms.
Melanomas meanwhile form around one percent of cases with around 16,700 people treated for the disease in the UK every year. These are the often more serious cases as they can spread to other parts of the body. In most cases, cancerous lumps are red and firm and sometimes turn into ulcers, while cancerous patches are usually flat and scaly. Non-melanoma skin cancer most often develops on areas of skin regularly exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, hands, shoulders, upper chest and back.
