Lowry Art Gallery wins £6.6 million bidding war to keep iconic 'Going to the Match' painting

Lowry Art Gallery has bought the iconic 1953 LS Lowry painting 'Going to the Match' for £6.6 million. The artwork has been on public display since the gallery opened in 2000 but was not owned by the venue.

In recent weeks, Salford's Mayor Paul Dennett had launched a campaign to keep the piece in the city and he expressed his delight at The Lowry winning the auction. “ LS Lowry, Salford’s greatest and most iconic artist, made his name depicting working-class life – as such we emphatically believed Going to the Match should remain on public view free to access where everyone can see it," he said.

"I am delighted our campaign to save this critical and important painting has successfully resulted in The Lowry securing it tonight, for the city of Salford in perpetuity for generations to come, for residents and visitors to our great City."
