The BMW 330 being driven by PC Nicholas Dumphreys had a known fault which caused him to crash on the M6
Cumbria Police parked up part of its fleet of vehicles after a fatal crash on the M6 killed a 'committed' roads policing officer.
READ MORE:'Truly brilliant' police officer killed on M6 after BMW engine fault that was known about for four years PC Dumphreys' widow Kathryn, who also works for Cumbria Police but has not returned to her job since the crash on January 26 in 2020, has previously been critical of the force in relation to maintenance issues with the BMW which had been reported prior to her husband's death. However, the coroner said he was satisfied the service record was satisfactory, and an expert concluded the maintenance issues reported had no connection to the faulty crankshaft bearing.
