Manchester City have lost all three matches while Rodri has been suspended against Newcastle, Wolves and Arsenal.

The best lessons often come from the harshed defeats and Manchester City hadn't felt the sting of two successive Premier League losses since 2018 until Sunday. As frustrating as it is, it can still prove valuable.

It was already pretty obvious how important he is to the makeup of Pep Guardiola's side but the sharp contrast of their fortunes without him has made it even plainer. Like a watch without its battery, City just don't tick without him. But such a heavy reliability is dangerous. Like a society living off just a single food source, if the crop fails then famine reigns. City have been very fortunate to not lose Rodri for any sustained amount of time during the last four years, but what if he eventually did succumb to injury?

The relentless march for progress always demands more, more, more and eventually something will have to give - usually a hamstring. Perhaps Rodri will be lucky and never sustain a serious injury in his entire career. It can be done. But the odds are getting shorter by the week. Other than the possibility of John Stones taking up the role if needed, City don't have any other options. Kalvin Phillips is clearly not rated and Matheus Nunes is viewed as an attacking outlet. City have no reliably good replacements for Rodri.
