Still, he is not the midfield destroyer that United need, and bringing in a defensive-midfielder before the end of the window should be their number one priority.

The situation concerning Harry Maguire's future is less clear-cut. United appeared to be on their way to shifting the former captain earlier this month, only for his proposed move to West Ham United to stall. He rejected United's offer of a £6m pay-off, and it remains to be seen if anyone else, or indeed West Ham, will return with a fresh offer.
