The consumer champion is encouraging pensioners with specific weekly incomes to check for Pension Credit.
Martin Lewis has called for a better way to ensure 800,000 pensioner households are not missing out on an annual income top-up worth an average of £3,500. During his weekly appearance on Nihal Arthanayake’s BBC Radio 5 Live show, the consumer champion shared his frustration that Pension Credit is not an automated benefit, which could help lift thousands of older people out of poverty.
“If you are a single pensioner with total weekly income under roughly £220 or you’re a pensioner couple - both of State Pension age - with total weekly income under roughly £320, then you may be eligible for Pension Credit.” The quickest way to check if you, or someone you know should claim, is to use the online Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK here.
A Pension Credit award of just a few pence is enough to qualify for the remaining means-tested cost of living payments worth £300 and £299 . Pensioners eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment, born before September 25, 1957, will also qualify for the £300 pensioner cost of living payment.
