Potentially toxic blue green algae blooms have been reported in several spots across the shoreline of the Lough
Problems with the condition of Lough Neagh in recent weeks have no simple solution, according to the five MLAs who represent the Mid Ulster area.
Community groups and environmentalists have raised serious concerns about its impact on wildlife, tourism and the local fishing industry. “I and colleagues have been in contact with statutory agencies over recent days and weeks about the algae in Lough Neagh,” said Keith Buchanan, DUP MLA for the area.
SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone said he had been engaging with government agencies to see what can be done to address issues around the condition of Lough Neagh. “I want to hear from the people who know best and that’s the scientists at NIEA as to what any potential remedy is for the Lough to address these matters.“We as a party have a meeting arranged with NIEA in September to discuss this.”
