A shocking 35,000 bits of sewage-related litter washed up on Scottish beaches last year, according to a new study
. Research by the Marine Conservation Society, the UK’s leading ocean charity, uncovered the disgusting total from its regular beach cleans in 2022.
We previously told how sewage was dumped in Scottish waterways a record 14,000 times last year - with enough wastewater to fill 19,000 Olympic swimming pools. MCS said this was happening “time and again” and even occurring “near protected areas and bathing waters, interfering with the ocean’s delicate balance and polluting our shores”.
“For the sake of wildlife, people, and planet, we need investment in monitoring. Given how many sewage-related items our volunteers across Scotland find on our beaches, we know the situation is bad, but we need to understand the full extent of the issue, so it can be fixed.”
