NHS waiting lists now stand at a record 7.57 million people, 100,000 higher than May, and three million higher than pre-pandemic

Alan says the operation should have happened straight after the MRI confirmed the problem, but it took six months just to get that. The family, who have now been waiting two years, were all geared up for the surgery, before getting an email to say it was cancelled.

“Unless you are faced with medical uncertainty, people are just blissfully unaware and don’t realise how bad of a state our NHS is in.” She and her daughter say they have spent three months being “sent from pillar to post” – so far in vain – trying to secure an MRI scan. And her daughter’s job is now also being affected as she has to repeatedly get permission to work from home.

The IPPR called for changes including providing elective treatments on the weekends, creating regional waiting lists , a reduction in the number of patients automatically booked in for follow-up appointments they may not need and investment in the social care workforce. “I’m on a waiting list for a waiting list,” the 28-year-old says with a mordant laugh. “[My surgery is] a standard procedure. It was an eight-week wait to hear whether I’d even been referred and got my [preliminary] appointment, then no letter arrived. So I rang this morning to find out that, yes, my referral has been approved and I was now just on the waiting list for my first appointment to discuss the surgery, but that could be whenever.

Asked who she blames for the NHS crisis, she replies: “The Government, 100 per cent. We wouldn’t be in this mess if they were able to allocate the right resources to the NHS. And the NHS has saved my life on many occasions.
