People can find out if a family member who has died was due State Pension arrears from DWP.

Online guidance from the Department for Work and Pensions explains how the next of kin, or an executor of someone’s estate, can request information about State Pension underpayments - worth up to an average of £11,650 - for someone who has died. The DWP estimates that due to historical errors, some 165,000 older people have been underpaid their State Pension by £1.2billion.

Again, these issues affect mostly women who received Child Benefit before 2000 and whose National Insurance record was not updated to reflect periods of HRP they were entitled to. However, the DWP cannot begin to correct these cases until HM Revenue and Customs , which administers both National Insurance and Child Benefit records, corrects the affected National Insurance records.

Underpaid State Pension for someone who has died The guidance applies to everyone living in Scotland, England and Wales - similar guidance can be found on NIDORECT.GOV for those in Northern Ireland. Below is an overview of the current State Pension underpayments progress and who may have been affected.
