In a deep draft that was light on stars, teams maneuvered a ton, setting a record number of trades. Who raised ceilings, and who raised questions? SandoNFL weighs in.

How long could the Colts avoid drafting a first-round quarterback after Andrew Luck’s surprise retirement nearly four years ago? Answer: 1,342 days.

“They needed something to have hope,” an exec said of Anthony Richardson’s selection with the fourth pick. “It’s a free roll for the new coach with a six-year contract. Go with the high-upside guy, which you need in the AFC, and if it doesn’t work out, the coach gets another shot. But it’s definitely anxious times for the personnel people because they are on the clock, and this high-risk prospect had better hit.

It’s pretty much impossible for an organization to reach consensus on using a top-five pick for a 20-year-old quarterback with 13 starts and a 54.7 percent completion rate, as my Football GM podcast co-host Randy Mueller“They probably did not have consensus and they are just taking a shot, which I actually think is a smart move by the organization, independent of the risks for the GM,” another exec said.

“ Ballard likes to play it safe, he doesn’t like to trade up, he is fine trading out of the first round,” another exec said. “DeForest Buckner was as safe as can be. Themove could be attributed to the coach. And so now he is forced to stick his head on the line for a guy with a limited résumé. I wonder how much better would they feel right now if they had traded into the top spot?”
