A public consultation has been opened on the plans
A public consultation to make period products free to all has been launched by a Stormont department.
Previously, Northern Ireland had been the only part of the UK not to have a permanent scheme in place to tackle period poverty. “Given the challenges facing families with the rising cost of living it's important that the provisions of my Bill are introduced as soon as possible. The SDLP councillor added: “I brought forward this legislation because I was inspired to do something as a father and grandfather after learning about the challenges many still face in obtaining these products.
“This is an important piece of legislation that will provide the basis for introducing vital support to tackle issues around period dignity. In Northern Ireland pilot programmes had previously been put in place by the Departments of Education and Economy.
