A number of beaches across Northern Ireland have been ranked in the top 50 Best Beaches in the UK for 2023 by The Times.
To the right a footbridge leads to a pale gold beach, where the low tidal range and a hardly sloping seabed combine to offer the gentlest swimming conditions on the Antrim coast. Benone is a fabulous beach for storm-watching but it’s better in the sunshine. “On any given day you can see horses, sand surfers on the dunes, actual surfers on the waves and hordes of dog walkers,” says Teresa Black from Armoy.
It’s a bit of a hike down from the National Trust car park just off the A2, with dunes to cross at the bottom, but that’s a negligible effort when it comes to visiting what is possibly the most beautiful beach in these isles, with sand that sings, wild orchids growing in the dunes, and, when I visited, flocks of eider ducks among the rocks.
The loos, shops and lifeguards are at the town end of the beach, close to the car park, but beyond that Portrush East Strand is as wild and as rural as any. That’s Harry’s Shack: friendly, unpretentious and as good a beach restaurant as you’ll find anywhere in the UK and Northern Ireland, serving cocktails and superb seafood lunches and dinners.
