The owners of a Newark based auto mechanics have shared the history of their business, which is the oldest testing centre in Nottinghamshire still trading under its original name. Dave Harmes and Neil Mateson have been the owners of Chapples Autos on North Gate for almost two decades.
Neil added: "It probably did a lot of work for the brewery as a wheel right because of all the carts and horses. He ran it as a business from here and then a workshop and then he used to sell a few cars from here as well." Jack Chapple ran the business until 1979, it was then taken over by a father and son, and then years later taken over by friends Dave and Neil. In their ownership the business has been through many challenges, including the pandemic and the cost of living crisis.
Dave added: "People have been known to move away and then come back. It's hopefully due to our reputation and customer service as it's been an MOT testing point since the 1960s and it is still trading today."
