Nottingham City Council unexpectedly revealed that it was facing another £26 million gap this year
May was an incredibly jubilant month for the Labour group on Nottingham City Council. Despite issues in the preceding four years, most notably the collapse of Robin Hood Energy and the illegal spending of housing money, Labour increased its already staggering majority to return as the party of control in Nottingham.
The first official day of reopening saw thousands of people from around the world descend on Nottingham to fall in love again with the majestic ducal palace, caves and all things Robin Hood. It was perhaps the immensely positive story of the Castle that led to a full meeting of Nottingham City Council on Monday having an occasionally pantomime quality.
Having already filled a huge hole in its budget this year by axing jobs, hiking car parking fees and charging more council tax, Nottingham City Council unexpectedly revealed that it was facing another £26 million gap this year. Not only that, but the council said it overspent by £10 million last year and the authority is predicting a £51 million gap next year.
In its reply, the council did indeed re-commit to that decision, but things looked slightly less certain when it came to the future of these services. The authority has said we have to be "realistic" about the financial climate it is operating in.
