He will be sentenced in September

An 82-year-old pensioner spent nine days at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham before he died after being punched at a bus station. Dennis Clarke was on his way home from a shopping trip when he was felled with a single blow at the main bus station in Derby.

The victim suffered a fractured skull and died at Queen’s Medical Centre, in Nottingham, nine days later. Adjourning the sentence until the end of September, Judge Shaun Smith KC said: “You have been found guilty of a serious crime and I have got to sentence you for that. He said minutes before, the defendant and two friends, then aged 13 and 14, were hanging around the escalators at the former Eagle Market and the victim told them off for messing around before walking to catch a bus while carrying his shopping. He said the three youths followed him, shouting abuse and with at least two of them filming it on their mobile phones.

“He did push back, even raising his fists. The defendant then landed a punch on Dennis Clarke, knocking him straight to the floor.“ Members of the public rushed to Mr Clarke's assistance. Omar Moumeche ran away out of the bus station trying to avoid being caught. But he was, by the police, just around the corner.

Giving evidence last week, Moumeche told how he has completed exams at Derby College’s Roundhouse campus and plans to go to university to study business management. James Horne KC, his barrister, asked him why he thought Mr Clarke was about to hit him when he punched him first. He replied: “Because he had his right fist up, it was clenched and he was rocking back and forth as though he was going to hit me.
