Ukrainian Independence Day takes place on August 24 and marks the day the country became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991
Perth was draped in blue and yellow on Sunday as the city hosted rapturous Ukrainian Independence Day celebrations.
The event was a chance for local people to show their support for the people of Ukraine, many of whom have made their homes in the area since the Russian invasion escalated in 2022, and to sample some Ukrainian culture.Large numbers of Ukrainians and performers from the eastern European country travelled to the North Inch to be a part of it.
There was a fantastic turnout with the likes of former Ukraine ambassador to the UK, Vadym Prystaiko, and St Johnstone’s Max Kucheriavyi attending. The parade started at 11.30am and marched from the 51st Highland Division Memorial to the North Inch. Visitors then enjoyed performances by acts including Oberih, the Edinburgh Ukrainian Choir and Dancers, and Ukrainian singers Elzara Batalova and Melina Kantarzhy.Stalls offering traditional home-cooked Ukrainian food including piroshki, vareniki and borscht were on offer.Strathallan Councillor Steven Carr, who chairs Dnipro Kids, said the celebration “shows that we have not forgotten what is happening in their home country and they will always have a safe place to stay here.
