Prince Philip was never given the title of King because of a royal tradition
King Charles III’s coronation will take place in May next year - ushering in a new era for Britain and its monarchy.
The reason is, royal tradition and common law dictates that while wives of kings are known as queen consorts, husbands of queens are known only as prince consorts. Sir Winston reported the Queen had suggested the title to the Duke, but he “refused even to consider accepting any new title at present”.And while Prince Philip, also known as Duke of Edinburgh, did not have his coronation ceremony, he did pay homage to his wife during her crowning in 1953.
