“My parents made sure that I never forgot where I come from,” says musician Priya Ragu.
Born in Switzerland to Sri Lankan parents, growing up, “it was very difficult to balance those two cultures. When I was young, I felt like I had to hide my heritage – it was not cool enough.” There was one exception: “the music part,” she smiles. “I always felt connected to it. That’s one of the parts of my heritage that I didn’t hide.”
She’s named her singular sound ragu wavy – “ragu” being a shortening of her surname Ragupathylingam, and reflective of their sumptuous blend of influences: R&B, soul and the Tamil music they grew up with. Her emergence coincides with a wave of creativity throughout the South Asian diaspora, with artists mining their roots to inspire wildly forward-thinking creations.
I’ve never thought about that, actually... Because if I have achieved success, then it has been because of my music and not because of anything else. So it’s okay for me. Even if I fail tomorrow, I will know at least I tried and I’m okay with that.
