The Saints full-back earned his first start for Australia against England at Wembley alongside team-mate Keanu Baccus.
St Mirren defender Ryan Strain revealed it was a “very proud moment” to earn a dream first start for the Socceroos against England at Wembley.
Strain almost marked his starting debut with a goal, with his low effort desperately cleared off the line by Brighton centre back Lewis Dunk. “We had a lot of chances. I had a big chance myself. I saw the keeper coming out, so I kept it low, but it was great defending by Lewis Dunk. Strain’s golden chance to break the deadlock and pick up a first goal for his country in the process in just his second cap was set up by a superb long pass in behind from St Mirren team-mate Keanu Baccus.
“There wasn’t much in it. They’ve got quality players, as do we. I think in the end, we probably had the more clear cut or better chances. They were just more clinical with theirs. Ever since my chance at the World Cup I’m getting more minutes for the national team, and it feels a bit more comfortable with the backing from the staff and all the players out there.
