after some schools barred pupils from wearing unbranded skirts, trousers and jumpers, instead insisting upon logoed items costing up to four times as much., some schools have been accused of disregarding statutory guidance to ensure uniforms are affordable, forcing parents and caregivers to dress children in “outrageously” expensive branded clothes.
Parents, guardians and carers “should not have to think about the cost of a school uniform when choosing which school to apply for,” the guidance states. Schools must comply with the guidance by September, except where this would mean breaching a pre-existing contract, or where they need to run a process to get a contract in place.In Nottinghamshire, the mother of a child at a local secondary school was so incensed by the number of expensive logoed items pupils must wear, she set up a petition calling on the school’s leaders to allow generic supermarket versions too.
Allowing families to purchase unbranded items from the high street would help to reduce “burdensome” costs when many households are struggling, said Jenny Rosenbaum, who started the petition. “People can’t afford to pay £20 for one pair of trousers… You can get two [pairs] for half that price,” said one signatory of the petition.
