The inquiry was set up to look into the circumstances in which patients were given infected blood by the NHS, particularly after 1970
A Scottish survivor of the infected blood scandal has claimed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak showed “contempt” to victims by dragging his heels over compensation payments while he was chancellor.
Bruce Norval, 58, of Inverness, a haemophiliac infected with hepatitis C by the NHS 55 years ago, said: “Sunak has submitted a statement that just runs into a third page and makes it clear he’s not read any substantial reports. This shows his contempt for public inquiries, just as he showed contempt when a fellow minister tried to get him to address the issue three years ago.
Former paymaster general Mordaunt revealed in a statement published on the Infected Blood Inquiry website this week that as chancellor, Sunak failed to respond to two letters she wrote in July and September 2020 to ask how compensation will be funded. Sunak, Mordaunt and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, plus Mordaunt’s successor Jeremy Quin, will give evidence from July 24 at hearings scheduled by inquiry chair Sir Brian Langstaff.
Top news stories today Experts believe the Government will have to find £20billion, with each infected person to receive around £1.5million. After last July’s first interim report, living infected individuals and bereaved partners received stopgap payments of £100,000.
