After two mass shootings, the government pledged a drastic reduction in gun ownership. Did it succeed?

he first shooting was on a grey morning this May. Maja, a woman in her 60s who lives in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, had just dropped her grandson off at school when she heard the sirens blaring. Her phone began to ping with notifications and she knew something was wrong.in time to see police swarming around a school. A 13-year-old boy had opened fire on his classmates with a handgun in the centre of Belgrade, killing nine children and a security guard, and leaving six more injured.

Calls for disarmament were displayed on billboards across Serbia. The authorities set up gun-disposal points at police stations, and offered to collect weapons from people’s homes. At the police station, Maja approached the woman behind the desk and whispered nervously: “Where do I hand in the gun?” Several other women were waiting, clutching lumpy packages. All had come to drop off guns belonging to their fathers or grandfathers, most of them heirlooms that had become a dangerous burden. One by one, they entered a small room to hand over the weapons. “We all felt the same,” said Maja. “Fear, then relief.”.
