McAllan, the Net Zero Secretary, said the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election had been fought in 'exceptional circumstances'.

An SNP minister has insisted the party does not take its support for granted after it suffered a heavy defeat to Labour at the Rutherglen by-election.

The Net Zero Secretary added the Rutherglen campaign had been fought in "exceptional circumstances" after the area's former SNP MP was removed from office via a recall petition. McAllan said: "I understand that, as a party, we have to think very carefully about what says to us. "We’re in the very early aftermath of it, but I can guarantee everybody that the SNP will think very carefully about that and about how we regroup and re-emerge from it."If the party could replicate such a result at a general election next year, polling experts have suggested it could win up to 40 seats in Scotland.
