The results don’t change anything. They confirm that the Tories are on course to lose hard at the general election It looks like it will be a historic spanking – on current assessments, even worse than 1997 🖋️ IanDunt for ipaperviews

Spin the Uxbridge by-election result all you like, Rishi Sunak, but your Government is heading for oblivion

Rishi Sunak did his best this morning. He looked like a man emerging from a burning house insisting the foundations were still perfectly viable. “Nobody expected us to win here,” hein Uxbridge, the only one of three by-election seats his party had held onto. “Steve [Tuckwell’s] victory shows that when people are confronted with a real choice, a choice on a matter of substance as they had here, they vote Conservative.

Labour took Selby and Ainsty off the Tories with a 23.7 per cent swing. This is just a preposterous number. It turned a 20,137 Conservative majority into a 4,161 Labour majority. Labour needs ato form a majority at the general election. It required 17.9 per cent to win Selby. And it secured 23.7 per cent. You can dress that up how you like, but it is a vision of a Government heading for oblivion.

And there’s something else, a little deeper in the figures. The most troubling thing for the Conservatives is not their own numbers. It is the number of Labour voters in Somerton and Lib Dem voters in Selby.
