Northwestern Medicine scientists have discovered how HIV hijacks intracellular processes to proliferate and contribute to neurodegeneration, according to a new study published in Nature Communications.

is highly expressed in macrophages and microglia and restricts HIV-1 replication. To counteract this, HIV-1 promotes APP processing which ultimately results in the production of toxic beta-amyloids that contribute to HAND, according to Naghavi's previous research.

In the current study, Naghavi and her collaborators sought to identify the underlying mechanisms of APP's antiviral function. Naghavi and her collaborators found that the processing of APP occurs within subsets of multivesicular bodies that are also required for HIV-1 replication, according to the study.

After making this discovery, Naghavi and her collaborators treated cultured cells with a clinically approved inhibitor of the APP processing pathway and found that it successfully blocked HIV-1's access to the MVBs, thereby suppressing viral replication in microglia and macrophages.

Novel treatment based on gene editing safely and effectively removes HIV-like virus from genomes of non-human primatesNovel treatment based on gene editing safely and effectively removes HIV-like virus from genomes of non-human primatesA single injection of a novel CRISPR gene-editing treatment safely and efficiently removes SIV—a virus related to the AIDS-causing agent HIV—from the genomes of non-human primates, scientists at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University now report. The groundbreaking work complements previous experiments as the basis for the first-ever clinical trial of an HIV gene-editing technology in human patients, which was authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2022.

Study finds adults with heart disease less likely to use health tracking appsStudy finds adults with heart disease less likely to use health tracking appsTwo in five U.S. adults with or at risk for heart disease use smartphones or tablets to monitor their health, a new Yale study finds. But those at highest risk for heart disease are less likely to use technology to track their health goals. The aim of the study was to identify gaps in the adoption of mobile health technologies and potential avenues to mitigate cardiovascular risk factors.
