Hopkinton police say they responded to a 911 call around 8 p.m. Friday reporting a swimmer -- later identified as Wilinson J. Orbequito -- had not returned after going in the water with his friend at Sandy Beach.The search efforts continued until midnight but were halted because of severe weather, authorities said. They resumed at 7 a.m. Saturday, and the swimmer's family was notified that it was a recovery operation.Sign up for NECN newsletters.
A specially trained K9 helped authorities find Orbequito. He was found in 12 feet of water shortly after 8 a.m., 90 feet from the shore, near the buoy. “At night time there’s no lifeguards over there and no lights either at the moment and you can hear people. Usually there’s young people laughing and swimming at night. Pretty much every night during the summer. It’s very sad when something happens like that in our back yard here," resident Stephen Scarlata said.
