Taylor Swift has never sounded more unsettled - or more self-loathing - than on Midnights This album is a soundtrack to staying up all night, raking over every awful thing you’ve ever said or done ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Perhaps the most concentrated hit of whatis about can be found in the Lana Del Rey collaboration “Snow on the Beach”. It’s a richly reverent song of breathy vocals and harmonies that don’t quite resolve in the way you expect them to. Swift borrows Del Rey’s tendency to dig around in the very worst of her psyche, throughout. She sounds, more than anything, unsettled.lyrics, which are as wordy as a 1975 record, nod towards self-loathing and frustration with the ways she is perceived.
The saddest and most emotionally affecting track here is “You’re On Your Own Kid”. Swift sounds resigned to the mistreatment and rejection she’s suffering at the hands of a lover. The desperate actions of a woman trying to love a man who shows her no care are rendered in verses that tumble into each other and a quiet, driving beat like a pulse running slightly too fast.
The problem with the consistently washed-out, reverb heavy production – courtesy in part of Swift’s long-time collaborator Jack Antonoff – is that the svelte 13-song album tends to run together into one long sigh. Even the Billie Eilish inspired “Vigilante Shit” does little to rise above the dimly lit, downbeat vibe of the record.
