The ancient festival dates back to the Iron Age
The Beltane Fire Society describes the festival as a "living, dynamic reinterpretation and modernisation of an ancient Iron Age Celtic ritual and is the largest of its kind".
The name Beltane comes from Bel, also referred to as Belenus, the Celtic sun god and a god of fire. The festival was held to celebrate the beginning ofwhen cattle would be driven out to the pastures, including rituals that would be carried out to protect the cattle and crops. Among the highlights are the procession of the May Queen and the death and rebirth of Green Man. The May Queen is usually dressed in white, while the Green Man is garbed in leaves, with the procession ending with the two finding each other and"sparking the birth of summer with a massive bonfire and celebratory toast".
