Record View says the move smacks of putting pennies before pupils.

The attainment gap is still huge and kids need every hour of teaching that they can get. So it is disappointing that schools look likely to close next week after the trade union Unison rejected the latest pay offer for non-teaching staff.

Cash-strapped councils are cut to the bone and have little scope to go further. The offer of increased wages seems fair – and two other unions, GMB and Unite, are suggesting it should be accepted. The Scottish Government and council chiefs should convene immediate talks this weekend to avert strike action. A walk-out would be yet another blow to our young people’s education. Dialogue can go a long way and we hope all pupils in Scotland will not have their schooling upended next week when a deal is so close.
