From Bridge Street to Partick, the reasons behind the subway station names are all unique. In 2021, they were also adapted into Gaelic in a bid to protect and promote the use of the language in Glasgow.
If you're a frequent subway user in Glasgow you may have once wondered where the names of the stops originated from.
Cowcaddens The origin of Cowcaddens is uncertain, with some believing that that it stems from the Gaelic word for hazel wood, Coille Challtainn. It’s moniker comes from an estate with the same name, but as there is no reference to this place before the nineteenth century in Glasgow's first Ordnance Survey maps, it may itself be a title that has been transferred from elsewhere.
Although the modern Gaelic for Partick is Partaig , as seen on the bilingual sign at the railway station and used locally, this is a modern form derived from the English name.
