— might be the clear front-runner. But with nearly five weeks remaining, an Acuña vs. Betts showdown is taking shape, with Freeman and Olson not exactly unworthy.
Acuña Jr. is one home run away from becoming the first player in American League/National League history to produce a 30-homer, 60-stolen base season. He is batting .335 for the team with the best record in the majors and currently is on pace to finish with 148 runs and 76 steals. The only player in history to match those numbers in a single season was Ty Cobb in 1911.
WAR isn’t everything, but it is the best publicly available estimate of a player’s overall value, encompassing offense, defense and base running. Both Betts and Acuña bat leadoff. Betts has five more homers and 51 fewer stolen bases. He also is batting .392 with runners in scoring position, third in the NL. Acuña is at .316, but he also is batting .398 with a 1.076 OPS in the first inning, numbers that help theThe separator between the two might be defense.
Olson? He has gone 56 plate appearances since his last home run, yet still leads the NL with 43 homers and 112 RBIs. Freeman? His .415 on-base percentage is second in the NL only to Acuña’s .418, and his 50 doubles already are arecord. Both, however, are first basemen, and overshadowed somewhat by their more dynamic teammates.
The Braves and Dodgers both hold double-digit leads in their respective divisions, so it’s not as if one of the candidates is going to elevate his team in dramatic fashion down the stretch. Still, plenty of time remains for individual heroics in the final month. It should be a blast to watch.
