🏘️ Fresh Tory divides have opened up over Rishi Sunak's decision to scrap house building targets 'They dumped the planning reforms in the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill, and it's a mess', one former Cabinet minister told theipaper

The comments came as Simon Clarke, the former Levelling Up secretary, renewed his attacks against the Conservatives’ approach to house building in response to the local election results.

“We need to build homes,” Mr Clarke said. “We won’t be thanked by the Nimby [not in my back yard] brigade – but Conservatives will never be able to out-Nimby the Liberal Democrats or the Greens. Those votes are lost anyway – so we should aim to win over other voters, especially the young families who need championing,” he said.

He added that the Government was “trimming disastrously” the number of houses being built, which he warned was “damaging the interests of millions of voters in an attempt to court the votes of people who already enjoy the dignity and security of owning their home”.

“Keir Starmer has flip flopped on this, but his latest position is to drive on with mandatory [house building] targets and that is inevitably going to mean more inappropriate development and loss of green space and precious rural character. This could be a new front against Labour,” she told the
