UCLA may also be compelled to pay a so-called “Berkeley Tax,” in which it contributes “$2 million to $10 million” of its coming Big Ten revenue annually to fellow system member Cal to support the athletes on that campus. According to a recommendation approved in a separate vote, the board will have the authority to determine the amount once the Pac-12’s pending media deal is finalized.
The Board of Regents has held a series of meetings since July, shortly after the Big Ten’s expansion announcement, to discuss the impact of UCLA’s conference move, during which it was determined the board held the authority to overturn UCLA’s decision.
“With the collective goals to prioritize the health and well-being of our student-athletes and forward our academic and athletic mission under the umbrella of higher education, we will continue our methodical integration process of UCLA and USC into the Big Ten Conference.” The board had faced a lobbying campaign from the Pac-12 encouraging it to overturn the move, with commissioner George Kliavkoff espousing that “any financial gains UCLA will achieve by joining the Big Ten” would be offset by increased expenses. However, at the board’s Nov. 17 meeting, UCLA chancellor Gene Block estimated the school would spend an additional $10 million in travel and other costs related to the move.
