The boss of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, is thought to have been on a plane that has crashed near Moscow, killing 10 people onboard. Meanwhile, Ukraine says it has conducted a raid in Crimea with the help of its navy.
Former Russian prime minister, Mikhail KasyanovI, has said he has no doubt Vladimir Putin was behind the plane crash believed to have killed Yevgeny Prigozhin."I thought that Prigozhin would be killed somewhere in Africa or somewhere else."
Although Mr Putin has been widely accused of having had some involvement in the plane crash, neither he nor the Kremlin has made any comment thus far. The short-lived Wagner rebellion in June has had major consequences for its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, as well as Vladimir Putin. He had repeatedly claimed his Wagner Group fighters, who were deployed to Ukraine as a private military group and instrumental in many of Russia's battlefield success, were being unfairly treated by Moscow.
The next day, Wagner fighters moved into Russia's Rostov-on-Don, a key city close to the border with Ukraine, and claimed they had taken control of all military facilities in the area. At the time, it appeared Mr Putin had spared Prigozhin - despite his usually ruthless responses to perceived traitors.
Regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin said the farmer was working on a field near the village of Shyroka Balka.13:14:24After Yevgeny Prigozhin's coup attempt in June, Volodymyr Zelenskyy's former adviser Igor Novikov"made a bet" the Wagner boss wouldn't live long. "The Wagner Group comes under Putin's leadership. Let everyone answer the question for themselves - will the threat be bigger or smaller? The private military group had been under the control of Yevgeny Prigozhin, who is thought to have been killed in a plane crash yesterday.
Independence day coincides with a more sinister anniversary - as today marks 18 months since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. "Therefore, either that could be an explosion, or it could be a surface-to-air missile system," he says. "The trouble with that theory is that generally speaking, [an explosion] inside an aircraft blows it out and therefore probably wouldn't take a wing off, whereas a surface-to-air missile system or an air-to-air missile system generally tries to seek out juiciest meatiest parts of an aircraft, and that is where the wing joins the main aircraft.
